MORE ABOUT CONCERTS

MESSIAH

Messiah is one of the best known and most performed choral works in the western canon. This oratorio was composed by George Frideric Handel in just three weeks in 1741. Following the first performance in Dublin a year later, the response was overwhelming as the Dublin Journal suggests:

“Words are wanting to express the exquisite Delight it afforded to the admiring crouded Audience. The Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestick and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear.”

Since then, performances of Messiah have been literally countless, its impact incalculable.

The Illawarra Choral Society performs Messiah every second year in the Wollongong Town Hall with its magnificent organ. The choir will continue this tradition in December 2019 and will, once again, attempt to raise the roof of the Town Hall with our performance of the Hallelujah Chorus. Under the baton of Musical Director Meryl Jackson-Kew, the choir will be joined by guest soloists, organ and orchestra.

THE SPRIG OF THYME

Illawarra Choral Society Musical Director Meryl Jackson-Kew will conduct John Rutter's arrangement of 11 British and Irish traditional folk tunes. They range from the melodic ‘Afton Water’ to the lively Tyneside workers’ song, ‘The Keel Row’. The songs are variously scored for mixed, women’s or men’s voices. This delightful work will be complemented by a program of other short musical pieces.

ST. MATTHEW PASSION

St Matthew Passion is a sacred oratorio composed in 1727 by Johann Sebastian Bach. This deeply moving work is both sorrowful and powerful. Musical Director Meryl Jackson-Kew will conduct the Illawarra Choral Society as a double choir with four guest soloists and organ accompanist.

The work begins with a dramatic chorus of the double choir with a soprano ripieno soaring over the top. With gripping drama, it retells the compelling story of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus.

Bach’s Passion ends with the sublime chorus:

“In tears of grief, dear Lord, we leave thee
Hearts cry to Thee, O Saviour dear
Lie Thou softly
Lie Thou softly, softly here”

SAINT-SAENS CHRISTMAS ORATORIO

Saint Saens' Christmas Oratorio is a romantic work that is not often performed. The Illawarra Choral Society and soloists will sing it in the beautiful acoustics of the Wesley Church on the Mall in Wollongong. The concert will also feature Christmas music from different periods. We hope our audience will join us in singing some well known Christmas carols.
