A CONCERT OF CAROLS

The Illawarra Choral Society invites you to a delightful Concert of Carols to set the mood for Christmas.

A candle-lit procession will open Benjamin Britten's engaging A Ceremony of Carols. A committed pacifist, Britten composed this much-loved work in 1942 while sailing back to England from the United States, where he had retreated from World War II. His striking settings of early carols and poems express the excitement of the season, the horror of war, a deep longing for peace, and exultant thanks for the promise of salvation.

The Choral Society, under the direction of Meryl Jackson-Kew OAM, is delighted to welcome back soprano Louise Lavilles, harpist Paulina Smirnov and organist Peter Nickolas, all of whom have performed with us on several occasions.

The audience will also enjoy singing traditional carols with the choir, interspersed with less common carols from France, England and America.

Two performances in the exquisite setting of the Church on the Mall offer a great opportunity to enter into the spirit of Christmas and feast on some wonderful music.

Choose between these dates:
Saturday 10th December at 6:30 pm
Sunday 11th December at 2:30 pm

WINTER DREAMING

Our Winter Dreaming theme conjures up a variety of music from many genres. Under the baton of Musical Director Meryl Jackson-Kew, the choral society will be challenged by a range and diversity of choral pieces including short classical works as well as recent compositions. A bracket of Shakespearean poems is sure to be of interest especially since this year is the 400th year anniversary of Shakespeare's death. Set to music by such diverse composers as Thomas Arne, Henri Leslie and Stephen Sondheim the works are in great contrast and yet demonstrate the timeless, spaceless quality of Shakespeare's words.

The Wollongong Conservatorium BlueScope Youth Orchestra will join us again, under the baton of Nigel Edwards, and we look forward to some new compositions as well as classical works. We are delighted to welcome back Sherryn Kew (soprano) who will be presenting some very new songs. Shaun Warden (violin) and the St Mary’s String Ensemble will complete our program and a highlight of their performance is sure to be Vivaldi's Winter.

The concert will be followed by afternoon tea with our audience which is included in the ticket price. We look forward to the opportunity to chat to you in an informal setting.

DVORAK'S STABAT MATER

The Illawarra Choral Society presents this beautiful romantic period work by Antonin Dvorak. His Stabat Mater was written over a period of time when he suffered great grief at the death of first his daughter and then his other two children within a short time. Dvorak sought comfort in the ancient text of the Stabat Mater, which deals with Mary’s grief upon the death of her son Jesus on the cross. It was his first work on a religious theme. During the 10 movements of his work, the composer’s emotions move between despair and hope The final movement suggests that there is joy and peace to be found beyond grief.

The Illawarra Choral Society has much pleasure in welcoming back Heather Moen-Boyd as our organ accompanist. We are also delighted to be working again with three of our wonderful soloists from our December 2015 performance of Messiah. Blake Parham joins us for the first time and promises to be an exciting addition to our performance. Under the baton of Meryl Jackson-Kew this should be a lovely performance in an intimate and atmospheric setting.
